Introduction to Gambling in the UK

In the Gambling Act 2005 gambling is defined as a gambling or participating in a lottery. That definition distinguishes between activities which need to be licensed and other activities which do not. 

We categorize different gambling activities
  • Arcades (those for adults and those for families)
  • Betting (online, at an event or at a high street bookmakers)
  • Bingo (online or in a bingo hall)

Betting

Betting intermediaries
A betting intermediary facilitates betting between two or more parties. They do not have responsibility for the bets but often take a commission fee from the winner. Betting intermediaries can be remote or non-remote. 

Spread betting
We do not Regulate spread betting. It is the responsibility of the Financial Conduct Authority. 

Age restrictions are not
allowed unless a licensed gambling business.
